West Ham look for breathing space

West Ham fans have been through the mill lately. Relegation scraps and financial troubles have dominated over the last few seasons and although they have a talented young manager in Gianfranco Zola he has had to divert all his energies into keeping the team's head above water in recent months. Fortunately, the arrival of new owners seems to have given the club a bit of breathing space. David Gold and David Sullivan have promised to deal with the club's debts while ensuring there is still money available for transfers. So far, it looks like they are living up to their promises. With cash to spend, Zola was able to bring in three strikers during the January transfer window in order to bolster his squad. As this Front Room blog points out, Ilan, Benni McCarthy and Mido should be able to score the goals the hammers need to stay safe. Whether they will be the players to take the club forward remains to be seen.
