Liverpool’s only significant move in this transfer market was in the left-back position. Roy Hodgson raided his old club Fulham for Paul Konchesky while letting Emiliano Insua join Galatasary on season long loan deal with an option to buy the player next summer. It remains to be seen what the Anfield faithful will make of the switch of their exciting young left back for a 29 year old former West Ham player who has never reached the top of the game in his career.

While Insua didn’t have the greatest of seasons in Liverpool’s last campaign, at 21 he still has time to work on his consistancy. Insua impressed during his first full season at the club two years ago, last season saw a dramatic drop in form for the left-back. New Liverpool boss Hodgson had made it clear the Argentinean was deemed surplus to requirements at the Merseyside club.

The soccer betting odds believe that Konchesky will be a reliable alternative to Liverpool’s problem area this season. At 29 this is by far the biggest move for the former Charlton youngster.

Konchesky won’t be the most exciting signing Liverpool fans will have seen, but he could be a quality one none the less. Last season Liverpool alternated between Insua and Fabio Aurelio but never looked solid with either. While Aurelio offers a dangerous attacking threat, his defending has often been lacking in a position where it’s a pretty integral part of the job.

Konchesky is a very decent all round left-back. He has a good attacking game, with decent delivery and a rocket of a shot. His ability to get stuck in at the back will have been his biggest selling point. Every top side needs a Mr Reliable; Konchesky could prove to be Liverpool’s.

Wigan Athletic are desperately needing goals if they are to climb the Premier League table, but is Jason Roberts really the man they need. Everything looked set for the Grenadian international to head to Bloomfield Road and turn out in the Tangerine of Blackpool this season. But after failing to agree a deal, he looks as though the Latics could be interested in snapping him up. After shipping ten goals in their first two games, this Premier League transfer blog reckons one new striker is set to arrive today, and it is likely to either be Roberts or young Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo. They are short of striking options so you can understand why they need to bolster their attacking players.

Inter eye Kuyt

Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt could be on his way to Serie A, after his agent confirmed there had been “concrete interest” in the player from Inter Milan. ...

Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt could be on his way to Serie A, after his agent confirmed there had been “concrete interest” in the player from Inter Milan. Rafa Benitez brought Kuyt to Liverpool from Feyenoord in 2006 is keen to take the player with him to new club Inter as they look to justify their favourites tag with Italian Serie A odds.

The Dutch forward is still to decide whether he wants to stay on Mersyside although new manager Roy Hodgson will be far from excited by the thought of Kuyt leaving. The 30 year old would probably command a fee close to £12million as Liverpool look to keep their man.

Kuyt has been a consistent member of the Holland squad since making his debut in 2004 against Liechtenstein. Overall he has been capped 70 times for his country, scoring 16 goals in that time. He was part of the Dutch team who came so close to World Cup glory this summer in South Africa, scoring against Denmark in the group stages. Kuyt was integral to the Dutch team’s success in the tournament and had a hand in three of his side’s vital goals.

Despite being signed as a striker, Online Betting pundits note how Kuyt found his niche as one of the hardest working wide men in the leagues. His record as a front man in Holland was exceptional, he averaged a goal every three games for first club FC Utrecht and his 71 goals in 101 games for Feyenoord convinced Benitez to make his move for the player. Kuyt never managed to carry that scoring form into the Premiership but quickly became a fan’s favourite due to his boundless energy levels. Signing for the current Champions of Europe could be a hard offer to turn down however.

Craig Bellamy could end his career at Cardiff City, according to one of his former team-mates.

Craig Bellamy could end his career at Cardiff City, according to one of his former team-mates.

The Manchester City man moved to his home-town club on loan last week and capped his first start with a cracking goal in a 4-0 win.

Now Robbie Savage, who played alongside Bellamy for Wales, has claimed the former Newcastle United man may stay put for years to come because of how happy he looks.

Speaking to Radio 5 Live, he said: "I think he feels accepted... I think he could stay at Cardiff for the rest of his career, I think that's how much he likes it there."
Bellamy clearly enjoyed his debut performance and as well as scoring he also set up two of his side's other goals and Cardiff could now be Championship best bets.

However, a long-term deal for Bellamy could prove problematic for Cardiff given their current financial state. They have debts of around £30 million and even if the Welshman were to accept a substantial pay cut it remains to be seen how they would secure his services on Manchester City in the first place. City may want to get rid of him, but it seems highly unlikely they will let him go for free.

Still, whatever the future holds it seems Bellamy is set to enjoy a fruitful season at Cardiff and could even help fire them to the Premier League. The best odds for Championship games will suggest he is likely to score in most matches.

If he does that, then it will mean more than anything else in his career so far.

Will Wilson be given the chance to succeed at Liverpool?

Having joined Liverpool for what may amount to an eventual fee of £5 million, it is arguable that Danny Wilson, the Scottish Young Player of the Year...

Having joined Liverpool for what may amount to an eventual fee of £5 million, it is arguable that Danny Wilson, the Scottish Young Player of the Year last season, may well have made a poor decision in choosing to join the Anfield outfit.

With Rangers fully aware that the financial struggle they are embroiled in requires them to raise funds, it could be argued that the loss of the talented young player for a fee which could be as low as £3 million should Wilson struggle to succeed at Anfield is a piece of bad business for the Glasgow side.

Rangers know that their situation almost requires the Ibrox outfit to win the league this season, especially considering the loss of automatic qualification to the group stages of the Champions League for the second placed team in the SPL. The Betfairfootball betting suggests this will be a big ask.

In light of this perhaps the club could have organised a transfer that involved the youngster spending a final season on loan at Ibrox before heading south.

With Wilson himself admitting that his chances of becoming a first team regular are slim, with the youngster aware of the potential damage that not playing regularly could do to his chances of improving properly as a player, he'll be hopeful that his decision is not catastrophic for both his, and his former team's futures.

Although only time will tell how he will cope with the rigours of the Premier League, Wilson will now need to make sure that he trains hard and takes any opportunity that comes his way this season, or be forced to live with a decision that could have severe ramifications.

Meanwhile, Liverpool face one of the Premier League's new boys soon and the West Brom betting suggests the game should be a walkover for the Merseysiders.

However, in the league match before that they have to face Manchester City who should be tougher.

Steve McClaren has been given the job of bringing success back to Wolfsburg after they went from champions down to eighth place in the space of a season.

Two season ago Wolfsburg surprised everyone in German football by seeing of the challenge of giants Bayern Munich and co, to win their first ever Bundesliga title. Last season didn’t go as planned, before the season started they lost their title winning coach Felix Magath to Schalke.

New coach Armin Veh came in but Bundesliga Betting pundits recall how it never really worked for him and after the winter break with Wolfsburg down in 10th in the league, Veh was relieved of his duties.

Steve McClaren’s title winning season in Holland with FC Twente caught Wolfsburg’s eye and they moved quickly in the summer to bring the former England boss to the club.

McClaren has been tasked with getting Wolfsburg back up near the top of the league. He has started building a squad that is capable, most recently with the signing of Diego from Juventus.

Brazilian Diego cost the Italians € 24.5 million just a year ago when he signed from Werder Bremen. It hasn’t worked out for the midfielder in Italy and Wolfsburg have snuck in to bring Diego back to Germany. Juventus agreed with Wolfsburg on a transfer fee in the range of €17-€19 million, meaning the Italians have made a substantial loss on the Brazilian.

Diego will be looking to make his way back into the national side after falling out of favour in recent season. The playmaker has 38 caps for his national side but wasn’t fancied by previous coach Dunga. A return to form this season with Wolfsburg could help him back into that Brazil side.

Elsewhere in Europe, La liga betting is set to get underway soon with Real Madrid and Barcelona set to fight it out for the league title once again.

The top three...

When Martin O'Neill unexpectedly stepped down as Aston Villa manager the immediate talk was of which big name would replace him.

The top three candidates seemed to be USA coach Bob Bradley, Ajax manager Martin Jol and former England boss Sven Goran Erikson.

Now though, it seems stand-in gaffer Kevin MacDonald is the man most likely to get the job full time, something those who bet on football games wouldn't have predicted.

MacDonald is probably an unfamiliar figure to most football fans, he made 276 league appearances during his playing days but never quite hit the heights.
Nor has he been a high-profile coach, his only other spell in management was a four game stint as caretaker for Leicester City back in 1994.

However, his first Premier League game in charge ended in a 3-0 win over West Ham United, and his players have already given him their blessing.
Stiliyan Petrov, one of the goalscorers on Saturday, said: "He has been at the club a long time and has done a great job with the youth and has the opportunity to do it now.

"He showed with the determination, how he prepared us and the way he wants us to play that he wants to hold on to that job and I hope we can help him take that job.

Caretaker managers are always in a good position to secure the job on a permanent basis as they have an opportunity to show what they can do. Many suggested Aston Villa were an outside Premier League betting prediction for relegation after O'Neill went, but the caretaker has dispelled such fears and that will do him the world of good.

Owner Randy Lerner also seems keen to keep spending down to a minimum and it seems likely that MacDonald's wage demands would be smaller than those of the leading candidates.

It could be that MacDonald is the best choice both in footballing terms, and financially.

England skipper Steven Gerrard led by example at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Gerrard, who was one of a few players to come out of the World Cup with any credit, was ready to take the criticism on the chin against Hungary.

Speaking ahead of the friendly Gerrard admitted he would boo England after their woeful World Cup showing, but the Liverpool man made sure the fans didn't get chance to voice their discontent because of his dynamic performance. The 30-year-old put in an all-action display and scored two goals in the space of five minutes which turned the game on its head.

Behind to a dubious own goal, Gerrard hammered home the equaliser before weaving his way through into the six-yard box to plunder the winner. And he deserves a great deal of credit for his honesty and performance. He showed passion and desire, which was most evident in his goal celebrations and Fabio Capello must now be convinced he has to build a team around his inspirational skipper ahead of the European Championships. Liverpool aren't many people's Premier League betting tips, so he will have to be in top form for his club too.

Capello's decision to use Gerrard on the left-hand side at the World Cup came under heavy fire and Wednesday night showed just why Gerrard has to be used in a central position in behind Wayne Rooney. Fans and pundits alike called for Gerrard to be given licence to roam in South Africa and against Hungary he showed just how devastating he can be when he does. But it was his spirit and endeavour which caught the eye in a friendly game which none of the players apparently wanted.

Meanwhile, the football predictions for the weekend suggest Liverpool will struggle to beat Arsenal in their first game of the season.

Most people have already written off Blackpool as relegation fodder and that is understandable. While I understand that Newcastle do not have the strongest squad in the Premier League, I think there are a number of teams with worse squads. The signing of Sol Campbell will bring some much-needed experience to the side and I think they will have enough to survive. Personally, I think Blackpool and Wigan are the two teams that will really struggle, and then it is down to Midlands's rivals Wolves and West Brom for who will join them.

With the shock departure of Martin O'Neill from Aston Villa this week, the hunt is on for a new manger. It looks as though caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald will be in charge of the club's opening game against West Ham at least. McDonald will probably take charge of the Europa League game in Austria against Rapid Vienna, as Villa owner Randy Lerner tries to find his man.

It is believed that Lerner has yet to compile a shortlist following O’Neill's resignation. The American is thought be in no rush to appoint a new manager as the squad are happy with McDonald. The Scotsman is unlikely to be in the running for the job on a permanent basis, however. Names already being mentioned for the job are Sven Goran Eriksson, Jurgen Klinsmann and USA coach Bob Bradley. Everton boss David Moyes was in the frame for the job, but has ruled himself out of the running, insisting he is happy at Goodison Park.

Eriksson is currently the bookies favourite for the job, the former England manager has reportedly lowered his wage demands in the hope of landing the position. Eriksson would be a popular choice around Villa Park, he had a successful, albeit brief, spell in charge of Manchester City and sees Villa as the ideal job. USA coach Bob Bradley was contacted about the Fulham job before Mark Hughes was installed. He is one of the favourites due mainly to the link with fellow American Lerner. Bradley's contract in charge of the States expires at the end of the year after four years in the job. Although he impressed at the World Cup, Bradley has never managed outside his home country and he may prove to be too inexperienced for the Premier League.

Whoever is appointed, there seems to be an increased number of people placing football bets on the side struggling this year.

A lot of the names being mentioned are the same as when Fulham were looking to replace Roy Hodgson. Lerner is going to have to choose carefully to find the man to fill O'Neill's sizable shoes. The Irishman took Villa from a mid-table side into a top six side. He has brought European football to Villa Park on a fairly regular basis in his four years in charge. It's going to be a tall order for the next man in the job to replicate O'Neill's success.

Meanwhile, the Notts Forest betting suggests the side could be joining Villa in the Premier League next season.

They were unlucky to miss out on promotion last time around and will be pushing all the way again.

The news that five or six parties are interested in buying Liverpool will have been greeted with joy by the club's fans.

At times it has seemed like Tom Hicks and George Gillett would never relinquish their poisonous grip on the club and the damage inflicted during their three year tenure risked becoming permanent.

However, with news of Kenny Huang's official bid filtering through it seems a change is indeed on the horizon. The whole bid process is too complicated and vague for an ordinary football fan like me so I cannot be sure what exactly is going on, but the good news is that Huang is not keen to offer Hicks and Gillett the big fat profit they were hoping for.

They frankly don't deserve it for their disastrous spell in charge and it would have been a great injustice had they did. Huang's bid could at least give the Liverpool fans a semblance of a last laugh. When the pair took over, the betting odds suggested they club would challenge for the title, now they will struggle to make the top four. It's no wonder the fans hate them.

It will not, however, lead to a Man City style bumper takeover. The Chinese government are not behind the move as had been reported (which would have been a bit dodgy anyway - states shouldn't buy football clubs) and it seems Huang will only pay off the club's debt and offer £150 million towards new players and the new stadium.

It isn't a great amount by any means, especially if you consider the stadium is expected to cost £350 million. But looking at Huang's background he has a solid reputation as a shrewd and successful operator and one who squeezes the maximum out of all his ventures.

This is shown by his brinkmanship regarding the offer. With just a week till the season starts and a further two till the transfer window closes Huang knows the club needs to act quickly if they are to offer new Reds boss Roy Hodgson the funds to improve the squad.

The Premier League odds suggest Liverpool will struggle again and they simply cannot afford another dismal season like last year. With Champions League qualification a must, Huang hopes that desperation will force them to accept his bid.

What does this say about Huang's intentions for the club? Well I guess it is too soon to say. We have seen a plethora of foreign owners come into the Premier League with vastly differing results. If the deal does go through Reds fans will wait with baited breath to see what kind Huang will be.

But after three years with Hicks and Gillett, it can't be any worse can it?

Recently relegated Burnley have looked to tighten up their defence by signing Sheffield Wednesday's Lee Grant. Burnley beat of late competition from Bristol City to sign the keeper who will be competing with Brian "The Beast" Jensen for a starting spot.

Jensen conceded more goals than any keeper last season in the Premiership as Burnley were relegated, but the failure of the team can’t be blamed on him alone. However, Brian Laws is considering all his options heading into the new season.
Grant didn't have the best time of it either last season. His Sheffield Wednesday team were relegated on the final day, but the player did emerge from the season with some credit. Burnley were impressed enough to offer the keeper a three year deal at one of his former clubs. Grant spent a month on loan at Turf Moor back in 2005 when he was brought in to cover for the injured Jensen.

Burnley will be looking to bounce back into the Premier League at the first rime of asking and the fact they are among the favourite odds to win the championship suggest they have every chance of doing so. Although they have lost Steven Fletcher and Robbie Blake, they have brought in Ross Wallace, Dean Marney and Chris Iwelumo. Winger Wallace has joined from Sunderland and has shown his quality in pre-season, Marney has top flight experience with Spurs and Hull, while striker Iwelumo has a prolific record at Championship level and joins from Wolves.

However, anyone looking at Burnley's Carling Cup betting may want to bear in mind the tournament will probably be a low priority for them as they push for promotion.

The signings so far show that Burnley are going all out for promotion this season. After a season full of defeats last campaign, the Burnley fans will be looking forward to tasting victory again.

One of the signing of the summer could turn out to be Bolton’s signing of Martin Petrov. The Bulgarian winger joined from Manchester City on a free transfer last month.

With City signing everyone they can get their hands on, Petrov was deemed surplus to requirements at Eastlands. In his first season at City, Petrov was one the players of the year according to those who bet on premier leaguematches.

The next season a knee injury kept him on the sidelines and when he returned Petrov found it hard to get back in the team. The signings of Robinho, Carlos Tevez and Adam Johnson meant Petrov was way down the pecking order. It looked as though Spurs were going to make a bid for the 31 year old, talks broke down though and Petrov remained at City.

With his situation not improving, Petrov and City decided he would leave when his contract expired. Bolton were quick to act and signed the player as soon as he became available. Owen Coyle is confident the experienced winger will prove to be the bargain of the season. Petrov has 77 international caps to his name along with a C.V. that includes spells at CSKA Sofia, Wolfsburg and Atletico Madrid. At 31, Petrov still has a good few seasons in him at this level.

Coyle is still in the market for players as he looks to prove the people who have bet on championship status for Bolton next season wrong.

If he manages to convince Arsenal to loan Jack Wilshere, then Coyle will move his attentions to a striker. Last season goals were hard to come by for Bolton. Coyle is looking to sign Ivan Klasnic, who spent last season on loan the Reebok, although the players wage demands could be an issue.

Saints, Owls and Addicks Expect to contest League One Title Race

In recent times the quality of the Football League has continued to improve, each of the Leagues has become increasingly competitive and as we approach the new season, it is League One that is looking particularly exciting this year. The betting is looking tight and that is reflected in the quality of the teams looking to head into the Championship, Southampton are the team that the others are watching though and it is easy to understand why. Alan Pardew’s men finished last season on top form after a tough start and if they can continue that this time around they will be tough to beat.

The Saints started last season with a ten point deduction for going into administration but their financial problems are now a thing of the past, they have consistently been getting gates of over 20,000 and are clearly set up to play at a higher level. They have a strong squad Pardew will be eager to get the team off to a winning start that was something they struggled to do last season, which was the reason ultimately why they missed out on a play-off place. Southampton has the quality to go well and an experienced Manager at the helm which at this level counts for an awful lot when things are tight. Rickie Lambert is a hugely impressive striker for Southampton and he could be the key to their chances, he is a 20 goal man and if he can remain fit and on form has to be the favourite for the League One Top Goal scorer award.

When looking for potential challengers to Southampton attention is automatically turned towards Sheffield Wednesday, following their relegation from the Championship the former Premier League club must have their eyes on automatic promotion. They have been in the news for all the wrong reasons though over the summer which will make it tough for The Owls, financial problems are starting to take their toll on the club but the players will need to put that out of their minds come the kick off. The fans at Hillsborough will be there in their droves but there has to be some worry over their future, they are being well backed in the latest betting and those fans will have to pray that the bookies have got this one right.

Charlton are an interesting prospect this season as they go looking for a return to The Championship at the second time of asking, at one stage last year they looked good for a quick return but their form tailed off and they ended up disappointing in the play-offs. Andy Parkinson and the boys down at The Valley will know they will need to improve on that this season, automatic promotion has to be the aim of a club a few years ago that was more used to visiting Old Trafford than Dagenham and Redbridge. Charlton will know that reputations count for nothing at this level though as both Wednesday and Southampton have also found out to their cost in recent years.

It looks like being a tight race for promotion this year with teams like Peterborough and Huddersfield also expecting to mount an assault on the top six, but in truth, two from Southampton, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton should be heading back to the Championship and the bookies football odds for the 2010/2011 League One title suggests as much. It is hard to look past Southampton for the title and they are justifiably the favourites this year, they look strong from front to back and it is hard to see them coming under too much pressure if they play to their full potential. Hillsborough though could be the news story of the season it just remains to be seen whether it will be for the right or wrong reasons, The Owls will be battling to stay in business off of the pitch whilst trying to be successful on it which is always a difficult task for any club.
